Our Goal Minimize
The goal of Communities Putting Prevention to Work is to prevent or reduce the spread of obesity and related chronic diseases by increasing opportunities for improved nutrition and active living via policy, systems and environmental change. The intent is to implement sustainable change that fundamentally alters societal norms, making the healthy choice the easy choice for Pima County residents.
The Power of Choice Minimize
Individual choice is the bottom line when it comes to personal health behaviors like eating and exercising. Individuals make choices based on what is available to them, what they can afford, what they know about the choice they are making and what is safe and convenient. Many community policies have created systems and environments that favor unhealthy choices or present barriers to healthy eating and active living. It is up to the individual to decide what they will eat and how much exercise they will get, but by addressing barriers at the community level, Communities Putting Prevention to Work will provide opportunities and encouragement for Pima County residents to make healthy, easy choices.
The Plan Minimize
Through a collaborative partnership with community-based organizations, the Pima County Health Department aims to achieve these steps to reach the goal of obesity prevention in Pima County:
  • Provide safe, attractive, accessible places for physical activity and access to healthy, affordable food;
  • Highlight for community planners methods to develop built environments that encourage physical activity and access to healthy foods via zoning, planning and development policy;
  • Engage local residents in assessing, planning, and participating in the design of neighborhood–level initiatives that enhance physical activity and food production;
  • Support local food production and distribute locally grown food at affordable prices by expanding farmer’s markets, developing policies and systems that encourage market use (such as increasing acceptance of WIC and SNAP/EBT at markets) and developing a system to support new family, community and school gardens;
  • Develop schools, worksites, faith-based settings and health care venues into centers of wellness by implementing wellness policies and environmental changes that support healthy eating and active living in these settings;
  • Develop plans for comprehensive programming that increase physical activity and improve nutrition before, during and after school for children of all ages;
  • Develop and implement a media campaign that promotes healthy eating and active living, and encourages our residents to make healthy choices.
